This annual Concerto competition is open to students who live or attend school in Collin County or study music with a Collin County teacher or PSO musician. Up to three Grand Prize Winners, in the categories of strings, winds and piano, may be chosen. Winners are named in both the Junior Division (grades 1-8) and the Senior Division (grades 9-12). The Grand Prize Winners receive the rare, but important opportunity to perform their winning Concerto with The Plano Symphony Orchestra in the Young Artist Concert on Saturday, March 27, 2010 .

ELIGIBILITY

Participants must meet one of the following requirements:

  1. Live in Collin County.
  2. Attend a school in Collin County.
  3. Study on the audition instrument in Collin County, or with a primary private lesson teacher who resides in Collin County.
  4. Study with a regular member of the PSO.

Former Grand Prize Winners are not eligible to enter again in the same category. (Piano, Strings, or Winds/Percussion)


AWARDS

GRAND PRIZE: Performance with the Plano Symphony Orchestra on Saturday, March 27, 2010. Up to three participants may be awarded a Grand Prize. Winners may be Jr. or Sr. Division entrants from any Category.


PLACE WINNERS: 1st, 2nd, 3rd Place and Honorable Mention Winners may be named in both Divisions of each Category.


The judges will designate winners only if they deem contestants worthy. The decision of the judges is final.


REPERTOIRE

Each participant must memorize and perform one movement of a concerto from the Approved Repertoire List. The deadline to submit a Concerto Request form for the 2010 Competition has passed, so no new Concerto Requests will be processed for this year.

FORMAT FOR 2010:

  1. There will be a Preliminary Round where each student will perform one or more movements of a concerto in a closed audition before two judges. (Please be accurate on the application about length of performance since the schedule is based on that time frame.)
  2. Each Category will have two judges who will rank students during the Preliminary Round. In each Division, they may choose up to two Finalists to compete for the Grand Prize and may designate 3rd Place and Honorable Mention winners. Up to 12 Finalists may be chosen overall.
  3. The Finalists will each perform a five-minute sample of their concerto movement in the Final Round to compete for one of the three Grand Prize Winner positions. The Finals will be open to the public and performed before the entire panel of six judges.


FEES AND APPLICATIONS

The Competition entry fee is $40 and is non-refundable if the applicant withdraws or cancels. Please make checks payable to the PLANO SYMPHONY ORCHESTRA ASSOCIATION (or PSOA). Applications must be received in the PSO office by 5:00 PM on December 1 , 2009.
